![]() On Soup and Sages A look at community, and the circle That thing called time, it moves around its own circle, tapping out each moment, each second trying to remind us, that the sands are dropping. In many cultures, it has been known that time as we know it, should be seen more as cycles, so instead of talking about seconds, minutes, or hours, let us talk about cycles—The cycles of Spring. No doubt if you are a maker, creator, business owner, you have felt the stirrings to bring yourself out, you were dreaming that dream during the long winter months, getting rid of what did not work, and what did work and now perhaps you are feeling the burgeoning need to create. For myself as a creator, that need is high, also the need to go within as well. There is this fire and energy that comes with each new starburst of colour that opens along the greening ground, reminding us of the quiet secrets that were held in the winter. The seeds of life made manifest as tender young sprouts, bringing forth their unlimited potential that will continue to create new life that will continue to bring it ever forward even as the blossoms fall from their stems, and the seed pod, later dries and let’s itself go to dive deep into the soil around it, to bring new life forward yet again. Each season brings us forward into energy and that is the difference between time and cycles. Time keeps its regimented hold on our lives marking the passage of each new day while cycles, bring forth a beauty that is awakening, flowing, sliding, growing, and then resting...it does not regiment us like little soldiers all in line following close together, to the beat of the industrial drum, to mass produce, consume, mass produce, and live someplace disconnected. What codes are hidden within a blossoming flower? One will never know unless you take time to observe. Time—time away from regimentation or rules, but going inward, using eyes, to drink in the world around you, and ears to listen to what it is saying. The old saying “take time to smell the flowers” could more easily be said, “Be in nature and know that as you do, time ceases its hold on you.” I had the lovely joy of spending time with Sheena Stellaria this last week, many of you know her as Sheena Heintz and know what a beautiful spirit she holds inside her being. I had completely planned something else, but had cleared the day, oddly enough, no work, save for my morning and afternoon duties, and I found myself sitting at a banquet table, filled with the most beautiful delights, herbals, and items to create soup. She had felt the need for community as so many of us do, and we created it right there, right then, in time not with a clock but with the moment. After herbal teas, prepared with care by her loving medicinal hands and creating soup together, talking about foraging and foods that are grown so naturally on the Earth, how little respect we give to those that hold that deeper knowledge surfaced in me. Some of us walk the Earth, and know her goodness, and some of us only talk of the Earth, but to be a friend of Earth, we truly need to be, I feel a little more like Sheena. Barefoot and connected to a different message, and that is the nature of cycles. While the rest of us throw ourselves, like hurling rocket ships towards some unknown assumption of success, others walk and move until success is given to them through the very soles of their feet. Wachipi, “they dance” in Lakota, is much like stars, how stars turn, rotate, move, cycling, movement, dancing, twinkling. It is hard to twinkle when you are forced into a rhythm that is not one of your own. Clocks do that, that is why time and money are much related in Lakota, Maza Skan, and Maza Skan, Skan. Neither were deeply thought of or given places of honor in a circular society. I once had to play the bugle for a funeral for a veteran near Wounded Knee, Manderson to be exact, and it was a cold November day. I stood there with my Legion jacket on, my bugle like ice in my hands, I kept the mouthpiece warm for over 3 hours until finally over the hill arrived the funeral party. You see, time is relative in Lakota culture, it is only time when all the people arrive, for you do not know the hardships, the space and places, or the ordeals it took them to get there. I learned a lot that day and about the dedication it takes to serve culturally. The wake went on, until far in the night and they had asked me to play taps at the end. I learned about the people; I learned about the importance of soup and how it must be shared. Make sure to share soup in your business practice. What do I mean by that? Make sure to Make Relations as we say in Lakota, make sure to Make Relations with the people you will serve, and will serve you back, learn to create together, not in separation for any dish is better enjoyed in community. Also, remember to give from your heart, take time, to make the blessing, the offering in loving kindness, or it is not love. We have been talking about the ugliness of service recently, and how it should never be extracted, but given as a loving gift. Always lead with your heart, and then you will never go wrong. As for Sheena, this beautiful scintillating star is creating her Living Yoga practice as it should be, one small movement at a time, and dancing, dancing, dancing, Wachipi. As she leaves us for a time to go towards her next spiritual journey and Live her Yoga and medicine work in community may you understand how important it is to take time, when she gets back from her orbital, cosmic, journey, perhaps you will find her feet sunk deeply into the sands of Ocean View, near the entrance to Beach View. Watch for her upcoming workshops and teachings later in the season and may you always make and share soup with friends. Go out and Make Relations dear ones, for the journey and the souls you encounter along the way help you to strengthen your own. Do you want to become a collaborator with Naradahaus.org?
